Oil and Gas IndustryA variety of components used in the oil and gas industry (e.g., down-hole drilling) are exposed to hostile environments that lead to corrosion, abrasive wear, and galling. Many of these components are manufactured from nickel based alloys such as Inconel 718. The Borofuse Process substantially improves the performance of components which are exposed to these environments, including threaded linear actuators (Fig. 6), ball valves, and valve seats (Fig. 7).
Injection Molding-CompoundingComponents used in injection molding and compounding equipment can experience severe wear and corrosion. Oftentimes, this equipment is used to process heavily “filled” abrasive materials such as high strength elastomers. A wide variety of these components, including screws, barrels (Fig. 8), sprue bushings, gates, molds, and granulator screens, are Borofuse Processed.
Textile IndustryHigh speed textile equipment contains various components that experience wear caused by the abrasive nature of the fibers being processed. Fibers such as denim are particularly abrasive, and the Borofuse Process has resulted in a substantial increase in the service life of these textile components. AerospaceThe new F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter is powered by the Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 gas turbine engine. This engine incorporates a thrust vectoring exhaust nozzle which redirects the exhaust gases from the turbine, resulting in improved in-flight maneuverability and enhanced takeoffs. The various nozzle bearing components are manufactured from age -hardenable nickel alloys, and subsequently Borofuse Processed in order to prevent wear, galling, and corrosion under the aggressive operating environment. Gas turbine engines used in military aircraft are required to operate under conditions whereby the fuel is contaminated with abrasive particles. The main fuel pumps often use wear resistant materials such as tungsten carbide, but still experience erosion because of the relatively soft cobalt binder. Borofuse Processing of the metal-bonded carbide vane pump components which converts the soft cobalt binder to hard cobalt boride, results in a substantial improvement in erosion resistance. Packaging IndustryA variety of components used in the Packaging Industry experience extensive wear and galling. For example, rolls used in seaming cans must accomplish a cold forming operation under non-lubricated conditions, often in an abrasive environment. Proper seaming requires maintenance of exacting groove profiles. As a consequence, wear and galling must be minimized. Seaming rolls fabricated from ferrous alloys (e.g., D2) and cobalt alloys (e.g., Stellite), as well as cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide have been Borofuse Processed to extend service lifetime. |
